In late September 2023, Jantar Mantar in Delhi became a focal point for political activism, following a Statehood Bill introduced by Dr. Farooq Abdullah during an ongoing session of Parliament. Dr. Farooq Abdullah led a protest at Jantar Mantar along with party leaders and legislators, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, to demand statehood and constitutional protections. The site, originally an 18th-century astronomical observatory, has transformed into a venue for democratic dissent. A 2018 Supreme Court ruling recognized the right of citizens to peacefully protest in this area. Separately, thousands joined street protests in various parts of Delhi under the "cockroach" campaign, pushing for educational reforms and using videos showing authorities firing pellet guns to counter their demands.
