The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 167,486 candidates who took the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), citing malpractice as the reason. The decision comes as part of the council’s efforts to maintain the integrity of the examination process. The affected candidates were found to have engaged in various forms of misconduct, including the use of unauthorized devices and organized cheating.
WAEC officials stated that the number of cases of malpractice has decreased by 1.11% compared to previous years. Despite this decline, the council emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of examination rules. Meanwhile, a viral list claiming that 50 schools had their results withheld was debunked by WAEC as fake. The council urged the public to disregard such misinformation and rely on official sources for accurate information.
In contrast, over 1.2 million students successfully passed the WASSCE, meeting the minimum requirement of five credits, including English Language and Mathematics. This success rate highlights the overall performance of candidates despite the challenges posed by malpractice. The release of results has sparked discussions about the effectiveness of WAEC’s examination system and the need for continued oversight.
