Negros Occidental has expanded its use of biocontrol fungi to fight the red-striped soft scale insects (RSSI) affecting sugarcane plantations. The province has treated over 77 hectares of fields with the pathogenic fungi, targeting areas with low to moderate infestations. This measure is part of a broader effort to prevent the pest from spreading further and damaging crops. Engr. Colen Ocalinas, action officer of the Provincial Biosecurity Task Force, announced the initiative during a press briefing in Bacolod City. The strategy aims to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides and promote sustainable pest management. The move comes as RSSI has been reported to cause significant yield losses in the region.
