Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber has launched an online tool to help South Africans locate bank branches offering Smart ID Card services, as part of the government’s push to replace the old green barcoded ID book with a more secure digital ID (iol.co.za). The new platform aims to streamline the process of obtaining a Smart ID Card, which is designed to be more secure and easier to verify.
The initiative comes as the government reports that over 360,000 identity documents remain uncollected, with many South Africans potentially still holding outdated ID books (thesouthafrican.com). Officials are urging citizens to check if they are eligible for a Smart ID Card and to collect it as soon as possible. The transition to the new ID system is seen as a key step in improving national security and administrative efficiency.
