A wildfire that rapidly spread through the Summerland area in British Columbia forced approximately 20,000 people to evacuate over the weekend. The blaze, which began about 15 kilometers northwest of Summerland, quickly expanded to cover 50 square kilometers within three hours of its initial detection (globalnews.ca).
Residents described a frantic rush for safety as the fire advanced. Some reported only realizing later that their homes or properties had been destroyed. The Summerland community, home to around 12,000 people, was fully under evacuation orders, along with nearby Peachland, which has about 8,000 residents. In response, Alberta deployed firefighters and equipment to assist with containment efforts (edmontonjournal.com).
