A fast-moving wildfire in British Columbia forced the complete evacuation of the town of Summerland, as thousands of residents fled their homes in a frantic effort to escape the flames. The Bald Range wildfire, which ignited near Summerland on Friday afternoon, rapidly expanded, consuming homes and driving residents toward the eastern side of Okanagan Lake.
Calgary resident Matt Strickland, who was camping with friends in Summerland, described the terrifying scene as the sky turned red from the smoke and flames. “The sky was glowing red,” he recounted, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The fire, which exploded in size to more than 100 square kilometres by Saturday afternoon, forced thousands to flee, with some residents being evacuated by helicopter as the blaze surged toward them.
Authorities declared a provincial state of emergency, with over 20,000 people evacuated from Summerland and Peachland. While many residents focused on leaving their homes, others worked to rescue livestock and animals, ensuring the safety of their pets and farm animals.
The wildfire continues to pose a significant threat to the region, with emergency crews working tirelessly to contain the blaze and assist those affected.
