The leader of the Quebec separatist Parti Québécois, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, has stated that a referendum on Quebec's independence will not take place while U.S. President Donald Trump is in office. He emphasized that the party would only hold such a vote after Trump leaves power in January 2029.
Plamondon outlined this position in a recent message on social media, explaining that the Parti Québécois would wait for the end of Trump’s presidency before initiating the referendum process. He also mentioned the need to clarify two key issues before the election campaign begins.
Some media outlets have reported that the referendum could be held in 2029 or 2030, depending on political developments. However, Plamondon has not ruled out the possibility of an earlier vote if conditions change.
The decision reflects the political sensitivity surrounding the issue of Quebec sovereignty, particularly in the context of U.S.-Canada relations and the influence of American leadership on regional politics.
