Millions of residents in England and Wales received a nationwide emergency alert warning of a high risk of wildfires. The alert, issued by the UK government, urged people to take extra care and avoid lighting fires in open areas. Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed the warning, emphasizing the severity of the situation as 37 fires were currently burning across the country.
The alert was the first actual mass warning of this type, following previous test notifications. Residents were advised to be vigilant, as extreme heat and a prolonged drought have left reservoirs in England and Wales at “exceptionally low” levels. Officials warned that the situation could worsen if the dry conditions persist through autumn.
Burnham also called for caution from smokers, as a ban on disposable barbecues has been enforced in England, Wales, and Scotland. The government is working to prevent further fires, which have already destroyed 19 homes. Emergency services are on high alert as the risk of wildfires continues to rise.
The Cabinet Office confirmed that the alert was sent to millions of devices, ensuring widespread awareness of the danger. Public safety remains a priority as authorities monitor the situation closely.
