Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has initiated legal action against Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), following allegations of extortion. The legal move was announced as Parliament reconvened on Monday, August 24, 2026. Afenyo-Markin claims that Gyamfi has made false and defamatory statements against him, which he denies.
The controversy stems from reports of financial losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. Afenyo-Markin has called for a parliamentary inquiry into these losses and the operations of GoldBod. Gyamfi, however, has publicly accused the Minority Leader of engaging in corrupt practices.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has confirmed it is reviewing the allegations of extortion and related conduct against Afenyo-Markin. The agency stated it has taken the necessary steps to investigate the claims.
Afenyo-Markin’s legal team has emphasized that the accusations are unfounded and part of a broader effort to undermine his leadership. The case highlights ongoing tensions between political figures and business leaders in Ghana’s governance structure.
