Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant salary adjustment for military personnel, marking a major shift in the country's defense budget. The new structure sets the salary for a General at N3.25 million, which is approximately $2,388 in US currency. This change aims to improve the financial conditions of soldiers across all ranks, from the highest command to the lowest enlisted personnel.
The decision comes amid ongoing discussions about the efficiency and transparency of public spending. Earlier this year, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) faced scrutiny over the allocation of $3 billion in funds during 2024. A senior official, Rufai Oseni, was tasked with explaining the use of these funds to the president, highlighting the government's efforts to ensure accountability in financial management.
While the military salary increase reflects a commitment to personnel welfare, it also raises questions about the broader fiscal priorities of the administration. The government continues to navigate the balance between investing in national security and managing public resources effectively.
