Mary McAleese, former President of Ireland, has resigned from her role as chairperson of the Gaelic Games Integration Steering Group after the GAA reportedly refused to commit to the 2027 timeline for full integration. McAleese, who was appointed to the position in September 2022, cited a lack of support from the management committee for completing the integration by the stated deadline. In her resignation statement, she criticized the committee for lacking vision and failing to meet the goals set for the organization.
The GAA’s director-general, Tom Ryan, and other officials have expressed concerns about the financial and logistical challenges of achieving full integration by 2027. Some officials argue that moving directly to full equality would significantly increase costs, potentially doubling them to €90 million.
