A deadly flood crisis has gripped Nepal and Tibet, with over 700 confirmed deaths and thousands missing. Heavy overnight rain has worsened conditions, making rescue operations nearly impossible. Rescuers near the Tibet border, where a deadly mudslide struck, were forced to move to safety after a new lake formed from the landslide.
Experts warn that the disaster was triggered by a collapsed glacier, which created a seismic impact when it hit the Lhende river in Tibet. Satellite images show the glacier’s collapse was powerful enough to cause significant damage. The situation is further complicated by rising floodwaters, which threaten to erase any trace of survivors.
The death toll includes 42 Australians and 49 Indians among 261 foreigners missing. Local authorities report 104 Nepalese, 33 Latvians, 18 Americans, and 15 Britons still unaccounted for. Rescue crews continue to search through mud-soaked terrain, but the scale of destruction has made recovery efforts extremely challenging.
