Jharkhand students escalated protests on Monday, marching toward the state assembly and staging hunger strikes over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations. The demonstrations, which began on July 29, have intensified following a youth-led “cockroach” movement in New Delhi that forced the resignation of the national education minister.
The ruling BJP called for a statewide bandh (strike) on August 11, urging citizens to participate in the protest against police lathi-charge incidents involving students. The strike led to widespread disruptions, with most schools and businesses remaining closed and vehicular movement heavily restricted in Ranchi and other cities.
Protesters accuse authorities of unfair practices in recruitment exams, claiming the process lacks transparency. Some students have taken to hunger strikes to demand accountability.
