At the National Health Summit, President William Ruto confronted Dr. Dan Gikonyo, administrator of Karen Hospital, over claims that the Social Health Authority (SHA) owes the facility millions in unpaid reimbursements. Ruto questioned the validity of the hospital’s financial assertions during a public exchange.

Dr. Gikonyo had previously stated that SHA had failed to reimburse the hospital for services provided under the county health insurance scheme. However, according to Mercy Mwangangi, a representative from SHA, 66% of the hospital’s claims have already been processed and paid.

The discussion highlighted ongoing tensions between healthcare providers and the national health authority over funding delays. Ruto emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the reimbursement process.

The debate underscores challenges in Kenya’s healthcare financing system, with hospitals seeking timely payments to sustain operations. No resolution was announced during the summit.
