Nigeria's National Audit Office has revealed that over 7.5 billion naira was spent on infrastructure upgrades at Lagos and Abuja airports, according to a recent report. The audit found that the cost of the projects, which included runway expansions and terminal improvements, significantly exceeded initial budget estimates. The report highlights concerns over financial mismanagement and lack of transparency in the procurement process.
The Lagos airport project, part of a larger plan to boost regional air travel, was initially projected to cost around 5 billion naira. However, the final expenditure surpassed this by over 500 million naira. Officials have not yet provided a detailed explanation for the budget overrun. Meanwhile, the Abuja airport upgrades, aimed at improving connectivity for the capital, also saw costs rise beyond planned figures.
The audit has sparked calls for greater oversight in public infrastructure projects. Analysts suggest that the findings could lead to renewed scrutiny of how public funds are allocated and managed. With both airports serving as key hubs for domestic and international flights, the financial discrepancies have raised questions about the efficiency of government spending.
The report comes amid broader discussions about the need for improved fiscal discipline in Nigeria's public sector. As the audit findings are made public, officials are expected to respond with further details on how the funds were used and what steps will be taken to prevent similar issues in the future.
