Fourteen Afghan migrants were discovered dead in a desert near the Iranian border in southwestern Afghanistan, according to local officials. The bodies were found in a scorching desert area, weeks after the group’s vehicle broke down and they began walking on foot in an attempt to reach Iran.
Authorities had been searching for the group since the vehicle’s driver arrived in a village in Nimroz province, reportedly parched and exhausted, seeking assistance. Five bodies were found shortly after, but the search continued for the remaining 14 migrants who had continued their journey.
