Pakistan’s rice exporters are setting their sights on expanding sales to Saudi Arabia, aiming to double shipments to 325,000 tons this fiscal year. This marks a significant shift from previous export patterns, with the country’s food industry targeting a $3 billion market. The push comes as Pakistan seeks to diversify its export destinations, particularly after facing challenges in the UAE market.
While some exporters are looking to replace the UAE as a key market, others face hurdles such as tariffs and certification requirements in Saudi Arabia. Fruit processors, in particular, have noted these barriers as a challenge to their expansion plans. The government is reportedly supporting the initiative, encouraging local producers to meet Saudi import standards.
The move reflects broader efforts by Pakistan to strengthen its position in the Middle East’s food supply chain. With the Saudi market offering a large and growing consumer base, the success of this strategy could have long-term implications for Pakistan’s agricultural sector.
The government is also working with industry groups to streamline export processes and reduce bureaucratic delays. This support is seen as crucial for achieving the ambitious target of $3 billion in food exports to Saudi Arabia.
