Mauritius and Kenya have joined four other African countries in urging a precautionary pause on deep-sea mining, as global powers like China, India, and the U.S. Intensify competition for critical minerals. The move comes amid growing concerns over environmental and economic risks linked to extracting resources from the ocean floor.
The call for a moratorium highlights the tension between resource exploitation and sustainability, with African nations emphasizing the need for caution. Meanwhile, China has surpassed India, South Korea, and Japan as the largest source of U.S. Student arrivals from Asia, according to recent travel data.
The U.S. Has also identified certain regions in India as facilitating China’s trade practices, citing a report that names the Pune-Gujarat-Chennai corridor as a key area. These developments underscore the complex interplay of economic and geopolitical interests.
As discussions on deep-sea mining continue, the focus remains on balancing global resource needs with environmental protection and international cooperation.
