The Madlanga Commission has heard testimony that former head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac), Andrea Johnson, held regular meetings with suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu while the directorate investigated Crime Intelligence officers, according to Drushanta Ramsamy, the former Idac prosecutor (mg.co.za).
Johnson reportedly told her team that Mchunu wanted to "clean up SAPS," suggesting a possible influence on the investigation. This comes as the commission continues to examine allegations of misconduct within Idac, with testimony revealing that internal complaints about alleged wrongdoing were ignored by former National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi (sundayworld.co.za).
Earlier, Matthew Sesoko, head of investigations at Idac, told the commission that key operational decisions, including assessments on potential investigations, were made by officials like Sesoko and Dylan Perumal, not by Johnson (iol.co.za). The testimony highlights ongoing concerns about the integrity and independence of the anti-corruption body.
The Madlanga inquiry continues to uncover potential conflicts of interest and procedural irregularities, raising questions about the effectiveness of South Africa’s anti-corruption mechanisms.
