Former police officer Gregory Loftus has accused the police of murdering his son Bevan during a 2023 operation in Durban. Loftus told the Madlanga commission that his son’s death was not the result of a legitimate operation but an intentional killing disguised as one. Bevan Loftus, described as an alleged gang leader, was killed during the operation that left five men dead.
An investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has revealed financial irregularities involving a Hawks officer linked to the same operation. IPID reported that Hawks Colonel Deena Govender and his wife were connected to deposits and payments totaling about R2.7 million around the time of the operation. However, no direct link between the money and the killings has been established.
The Madlanga commission is examining the incident to determine if there was misconduct or corruption. The case highlights ongoing concerns about police conduct and financial transparency in South Africa. The investigation continues as authorities seek to clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation and its aftermath.
