Volkswagen Group Africa set a new production record in July, with its Kariega plant in the Eastern Cape assembling 17,090 vehicles. This marks a significant increase from the previous monthly high of 16,670 units recorded in July 2025. The achievement coincides with the automaker's 75th anniversary of manufacturing in South Africa.
The Polo model remained the top-selling vehicle at the facility, contributing heavily to the record output. The milestone highlights the plant's growing efficiency and its role in supporting Volkswagen's operations on the continent. The increased production comes amid rising demand for compact cars in the region.
The success of the Kariega plant reflects broader trends in South Africa's automotive sector, where local manufacturing is playing an increasingly important role. The plant's ability to meet higher production targets underscores its strategic importance to the company's regional strategy.
The record output also aligns with efforts to boost industrial output and employment in the Eastern Cape, a key economic region in South Africa. The achievement is expected to contribute to the country's economic growth and reinforce its position as a hub for automotive manufacturing in Africa.
