MTN Group, Africa’s largest telecom operator, has announced a major partnership with UAE-based investor Tarek Al Ashram to develop a 150-megawatt AI data centre network across the continent. The project, valued at $6 billion, aims to enhance digital infrastructure and support the growing demand for cloud and AI services in African markets.

The collaboration follows a broader trend of convergence between telecoms and financial services in Africa. MTN has also expressed interest in obtaining banking licences in selected markets, which would allow it to offer lending services directly through its own balance sheet. This move reflects the increasing overlap between telecom and banking sectors in the region.

Al Ashram, a prominent UAE business figure, brings significant investment expertise to the partnership. The data centres are expected to play a key role in advancing AI capabilities and digital transformation across various African countries. The project underscores the growing importance of technology infrastructure in supporting economic growth and innovation on the continent.

The initiative is part of a larger strategy to position Africa as a hub for digital innovation and data processing. With the new network, MTN aims to provide faster and more reliable connectivity, while also supporting local businesses and startups through advanced technological solutions.
