President Bola Tinubu has ordered a major reform of Nigeria’s football sector to address repeated failures by the national teams in qualifying for major tournaments. The reforms aim to strengthen governance, administration, and stakeholder representation within the sport. Tinubu directed the National Sports Commission chairman, Malam Shehu Dikko, to work with the Nigeria Football Federation Secretariat and other stakeholders to ensure continuity in football administration. The directive comes after years of underperformance by Nigerian teams in regional, continental, and world competitions. The reform also focuses on improving domestic competitions and accountability across the football ecosystem. The government is seeking to rebuild the sport’s infrastructure and create clearer development pathways for players and clubs. Tinubu’s administration has emphasized the need for transparency and better coordination between football bodies to restore Nigeria’s reputation in international competitions.
