Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) has appointed Dr. Edwin Mercado as its new secretary, replacing Dr. Jose “Brix” Pujalte Jr. Who voluntarily resigned. The appointment was announced by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. Who also serves as acting president and chief executive officer of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth). The change comes just a month after Pujalte took over from Teodoro Herbosa.
The new DOH chief, Dr. Mercado, previously led PhilHealth, the country’s national health insurance program. His appointment marks a swift leadership change within the health sector, following Pujalte’s resignation. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed the move, stating that Pujalte’s departure was voluntary.
The transition highlights ongoing administrative shifts in the Philippines’ health administration. Dr. Mercado’s experience in public health is expected to influence policy and service delivery in the coming months. The DOH continues to oversee national health initiatives amid evolving public health challenges.
