A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the western Philippines on Friday, shaking buildings in the capital Manila, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Reuters reported. The tremor, recorded at 10:38 a.m. local time, occurred about 21 kilometers southwest of Mamburao in Occidental Mindoro, at a depth of 10 kilometers, PHIVOLCS stated in an initial advisory.
The quake was felt in parts of Manila, with witnesses reporting the shaking, according to Reuters. The event is separate from other recent quakes in Luzon and Mindanao, PHIVOLCS clarified, noting that the tremors in Mindoro and Mindanao are not connected. The agency also warned that aftershocks could follow.
Local authorities have not reported any casualties or major damage, but officials are monitoring the situation closely. The PHIVOLCS continues to assess the seismic activity in the region, emphasizing the need for vigilance in the event of further tremors.
