Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a new economic campaign targeting Iran, aiming to cut off its financial lifelines and isolate the country. Speaking at a press conference, Bessent emphasized the United States' commitment to "sever every economic lifeline" that supports Iran, describing the move as an "economic D-Day." The strategy includes expanded sanctions and a campaign to pressure countries to sever financial ties with Iran or face retaliation.
The sanctions are part of a broader effort to disrupt Iran's economy and limit its influence. Bessent warned that any entity facilitating money laundering on behalf of Iran will be excluded from the US dollar system. The campaign also includes a new buyback structure for longer-dated securities, which will take effect on September 9. Despite these measures, Treasury auctions will continue as scheduled.
The move comes amid growing concerns over Iran's nuclear program and regional instability. Bessent's remarks reflect a shift toward more aggressive economic pressure, with the goal of forcing Iran into compliance. The sanctions are expected to impact Iran's trading partners, urging them to cut ties or risk facing US retaliation. The strategy underscores the administration's focus on economic warfare as a tool for geopolitical influence.
