Ebola Outbreak in DRC Surpasses Response Efforts as Vaccines Tested
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to grow faster than response efforts, with confirmed cases nearing 3,900 and no proven vaccine or specific treatment available for the Bundibugyo strain, according to the DRC’s public health authority (sundayworld.co.za). The latest report shows 3,874 confirmed cases and 1,751 deaths as of Monday, with a fatality rate of around 45%.
Meanwhile, the Canadian government has authorized clinical trials for a vaccine developed by Moderna against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, marking a key step in the global response (lalibre.be). The trials, part of phase I testing, aim to evaluate the vaccine’s safety and initial effectiveness. Similar trials are also underway in the UK and Canada for other vaccines targeting the same strain (rfi.fr).
In the DRC, health workers and researchers are conducting treatment trials on infected individuals and high-risk contacts, though none of the experimental treatments have yet been proven effective.
