Uganda and Tanzania are under new scrutiny over the $20bn Tanga energy hub, which is raising concerns about long-term reliance on fossil fuels. The project, which involves significant petroleum infrastructure, has drawn attention for its environmental risks and potential impact on regional energy policies.
The initiative, which has already committed substantial funding, is expected to lock both countries into fossil fuel dependence for decades. Environmental groups and experts are warning of the long-term consequences, including increased carbon emissions and limited opportunities for renewable energy development.
Meanwhile, other developments in the region highlight growing interest in sustainable finance. A masterclass on climate resilience and AI-driven agricultural finance is being held in Lagos, bringing together professionals from across Africa, including Uganda. This reflects a broader push for innovative financial solutions in the agricultural sector.
Standard Bank has also expanded its UnionPay online payments service to nine African markets, including Uganda, offering more payment options for businesses. This move underscores the increasing role of digital finance in the region’s economic landscape.
