Building collapses in Nigeria continue to raise concerns over the safety of the nation’s infrastructure, prompting technical experts to call for stricter oversight of material-testing laboratories. A group of professionals from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) have emphasized the importance of periodic audits to ensure the reliability of construction materials. These audits, they argue, could help identify and address potential weaknesses before they lead to structural failures.
The experts highlighted that many building collapses are linked to substandard materials and poor construction practices. They urged regulatory bodies to enforce rigorous testing protocols and hold laboratories accountable for their accuracy. This call comes amid growing public frustration over the frequency of such incidents, which have resulted in loss of life and property.
In response, some local authorities have begun reviewing existing safety regulations, though critics say more needs to be done to ensure compliance. The push for transparency and accountability in the construction industry remains a key priority as the nation seeks to improve its built environment.
