The Nigerian government has announced that 60% of electricity consumers across the country have been fitted with meters, marking a significant step in the ongoing privatization of the power sector. This update comes as Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, also serving as the Minister of Power, received a detailed briefing on the activities of the Privatisation Council during its second meeting of 2026.
The progress in metering reflects the government's efforts to improve transparency and efficiency in the power distribution system. Officials emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to attract private investment and enhance service delivery. The Privatisation Council, tasked with overseeing the transition of state-owned enterprises to private operators, has been working closely with utility companies to meet targets set for the year.
Despite the progress, challenges remain, including the need to expand coverage to the remaining 40% of consumers and ensure consistent power supply. The government has pledged continued support for infrastructure development and regulatory reforms to sustain the momentum.
