Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara disclosed that the former Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Rumuigbo was used for illegal drug trafficking. During the commissioning of newly upgraded facilities, he highlighted the transformation of the site into a rehabilitation center. The new complex includes a 100-bed rehabilitation center aimed at tackling drug abuse and mental health challenges.
The governor emphasized that the upgraded Neuropsychiatric Hospital and General Hospital will provide better services to the community. The project, part of his administration’s infrastructure development plan, was built within the same complex where drug trafficking activities previously took place.
Fubara stated the new hospitals will improve healthcare access and support public safety. The initiative reflects efforts to address both health and law enforcement issues in the region. The facilities are expected to serve residents in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The commissioning event marked a significant step in the state’s public health and security strategies. Officials confirmed the new hospitals will operate soon, offering specialized care and treatment options.
