A Milimani Anti-Corruption Court has released 11 individuals charged with embezzling Ksh1.57 billion from the PROFIT programme. The group includes senior Treasury officials and business owners accused of abuse of office and other financial misconduct. The court decision follows charges filed against the suspects, who were linked to the fraudulent disbursement of funds under the Rural Outreach of Financial Innovations and Technologies (PROFIT) Programme.
The case involves nine suspects, including three Treasury officials and six business proprietors, who are alleged to have misused public funds. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) previously arrested the individuals over the alleged embezzlement. The charges include abuse of office and fraud, with the total amount involved reaching Ksh1.57 billion.
The release of the 11 accused comes amid ongoing investigations into the PROFIT programme, which aimed to support rural development through financial innovations. The court’s decision highlights the complex legal proceedings surrounding the case, as some suspects were freed on bail while others remain under investigation. The case underscores the challenges of addressing corruption in public financial management.
The PROFIT programme, funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has been at the center of allegations of mismanagement. The legal actions against the accused reflect broader efforts to hold officials accountable for financial misconduct. The case remains under review as authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the alleged fraud.
