Metro Cebu’s local governments are seeking funding and support from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to address ongoing flood issues. The request comes amid continued heavy rainfall that has caused flooding in several communities. Cebu City and Mandaue City have highlighted their priority projects to DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon.
The DPWH is also revisiting a 2017 master plan aimed at solving long-term flood problems in the region. The agency plans to link urban development with flood control measures. This initiative follows growing concerns over the impact of climate change on infrastructure and drainage systems.
Local leaders emphasize the need for urgent action, as recent rains have exposed vulnerabilities in existing flood management strategies. The DPWH’s leadership funds, which include at least P500 million allocated for priority projects, are seen as a potential resource for these efforts. However, the success of the plan will depend on coordination between government agencies and community needs.
The situation highlights the increasing pressure on public works departments to adapt to environmental challenges. With more frequent extreme weather events, the need for resilient infrastructure has never been more urgent.
