The Philippine military has observed an increase in the presence of Chinese coast guard and research ships in Philippine waters, according to recent reports. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) noted this shift during the first half of 2026, as part of ongoing monitoring efforts in the West Philippine Sea.
While the number of Chinese naval and maritime militia vessels has decreased, the AFP has recorded a corresponding rise in the activity of Chinese coast guard and research vessels. This development comes amid continued tensions in the region, with both sides maintaining a cautious stance.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) and AFP are also considering increased deployment to ensure maritime security. The situation reflects the evolving dynamics in the South China Sea, where territorial disputes and strategic interests remain a key concern.
The military continues to monitor the situation closely, with no immediate indication of escalation. The focus remains on maintaining sovereignty and ensuring the safety of Philippine waters.
