Pakistan has ordered the acquisition of up to five container ships to safeguard its trade links with Gulf markets, as the ongoing conflict with Iran has caused significant disruptions to maritime routes. The move follows a prolonged period of instability that has affected shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global trade. The conflict, which began in late February, has led to increased freight costs and hindered Pakistani exporters who rely heavily on Gulf markets.
Officials stated that the new container vessels will help stabilize trade flows and reduce dependency on alternative routes. Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly allowed Iranian tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, though the strategic waterway remains closed to most commercial traffic. Pakistan, along with India and China, has sought special permits to navigate the strait, highlighting the region’s growing economic stakes. The decision underscores Pakistan’s efforts to mitigate the impact of the conflict on its export sector.
