Pasig City authorities evacuated 1,249 families to 11 centers as heavy rains from the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” continued to hit the city on Monday, Aug. 10. The Public Information Office reported that 3,913 people were sheltered across the city. The evacuation was part of efforts to ensure safety amid rising flood risks.
Rescuers in Baguio City also made a miraculous recovery on the same day, saving a dog that had been trapped in landslide debris for nearly 24 hours. The animal, owned by a landslide victim, was found and returned to its owner. The Baguio City PIO described the operation as a “miraculous” rescue.
Meanwhile, a Pentagon official urged Asian allies to increase defense spending to counter regional aggression, emphasizing the U.S. commitment to supporting partners rather than acting as a protectorate. The remarks were made during a visit to Manila.
The monsoon season has intensified weather-related challenges across the Philippines, prompting local governments to take preventive measures.
