Retired South African police chief Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya denied any knowledge of the Big Five Cartel during his interrogation at the Madlanga Commission. The commission is investigating alleged corruption and misconduct within the police force. Lebeya was questioned about his involvement with Katiso "KT" Molefe, an alleged underworld figure, and an informant known as Malcolm X.
Lebeya was previously the head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI). During the interrogation, he was asked about the deployment of Hawks officers to Molefe’s home on December 6, 2024, during an ongoing operation to arrest him. Lebeya stated he had no knowledge of the Big Five Cartel, a group accused of involvement in various criminal activities.
The Madlanga Commission is examining allegations of corruption and abuse of power within the police force. Lebeya’s testimony adds to the ongoing scrutiny of high-ranking officials. The commission continues to gather evidence and testimonies to determine the extent of any wrongdoing.
