South Africa’s energy minister, Dr. Hendrik van der Merwe, has announced a revised electricity pricing policy aimed at eliminating hidden costs from consumer bills. The policy, unveiled during a national energy forum, seeks to address long-standing concerns about transparency and fairness in electricity pricing.
The new framework will focus on reducing municipal debt and improving tariff efficiency by restructuring how electricity costs are calculated and billed. Officials emphasized that the changes will ensure consumers are clearly informed about exactly what they are paying for, including infrastructure maintenance and service delivery.
The policy comes amid rising energy prices and growing public frustration over unreliable power supply. While the government has not yet released detailed implementation timelines, it has pledged to publish a comprehensive cost breakdown for all consumers.
The reform is expected to take effect by the end of the year, with a focus on improving accountability and reducing financial burdens on households and businesses.
