Nigeria has taken a significant step in global energy governance with its admission to the World Energy Council, a move highlighted by President Bola Tinubu as a milestone for the country’s energy security and international standing. The announcement comes ahead of the 2027 World Energy Council congress, where Nigeria is expected to play a more prominent role in shaping global energy policies.
The inclusion of Nigeria in the council marks a strategic shift in the nation’s approach to energy diplomacy, with Tinubu emphasizing the potential for increased investments and collaboration in the sector. This development is seen as a way to enhance Nigeria’s influence in global energy discussions, particularly as the country continues to navigate challenges such as oil production, renewable energy expansion, and energy access for its growing population.
While the focus remains on energy, President Tinubu has also called on religious leaders to address issues such as terrorism and kidnapping, urging them to condemn the misuse of religion to justify violence. This dual emphasis reflects the government’s broader efforts to strengthen national security and social cohesion.
