The Department of State Services (DSS) has launched a compensation initiative aimed at supporting victims of security incidents, according to a legal expert and human rights advocate, Hamza D. Dantani, Esq. Dantani urged security agencies nationwide to follow the DSS model, emphasizing the importance of compensating innocent civilians affected by security operations.
This initiative comes amid ongoing legal challenges involving the DSS, including a recent request to the court to terminate the defense of Omoyele Sowore due to repeated procedural delays. Meanwhile, the DSS has also been recognized for its collaboration with the media, as its director-general, Adeola Ajayi, received the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Man of the Year 2026 award, highlighting the agency’s commitment to strengthening security-media partnerships.
In a separate operation, the DSS, in collaboration with community vigilantes, successfully neutralized a notorious bandit leader, Idi Abasu Aiki, and over 60 suspected bandits in Katsina State, demonstrating the agency’s effectiveness in combating criminal activities. These actions underscore the DSS’s multifaceted role in both preventive and reactive security measures.
