Kenya has made progress in its efforts to attract a Lloyd’s of London insurance hub to Nairobi, more than a year after the global insurance marketplace first announced the initiative. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi confirmed that officials recently held a consultative meeting to discuss the establishment of a Lloyd’s representative office in the capital. The meeting aimed to outline the steps required to create a regional underwriting hub, which would position Kenya as a key player in the African insurance sector.
The government has been actively engaging with Lloyd’s to explore opportunities for the hub, which could bring significant investment and expertise to the country. Mudavadi emphasized the importance of the project for Kenya’s economic growth, highlighting its potential to create jobs and enhance financial services infrastructure. While details of the timeline and financial commitments remain under discussion, the government remains committed to making Nairobi a strategic center for international insurance operations.
The initiative reflects Kenya’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in global financial services. With the hub expected to operate under Lloyd’s regulatory framework, it could also serve as a model for other multinational firms looking to establish a presence in East Africa. As discussions continue, the government is working to finalize the necessary legal and administrative frameworks to support the project’s implementation.
