The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned of counterfeit malaria vaccines entering the Nigerian market, linking the issue to Chinese counterfeiters. The agency raised the alarm as part of its ongoing efforts to combat illegal drug imports.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Moji Adeyeye, emphasized the need for stricter controls and increased surveillance to protect public health. She reiterated her commitment to serving Nigeria rather than personal gain, highlighting her return from the United States to lead the agency.
The counterfeit vaccine issue has sparked concerns among health officials and the public. While no cases of harm have been reported, the potential risk remains high. NAFDAC is working with international partners to trace the source of the fake products and strengthen border checks.
The agency has urged citizens to purchase only verified medicines and report any suspicious products. This follows a series of similar alerts over the past year, indicating a growing challenge in ensuring drug safety in Nigeria.
