Europe faces a growing fuel crisis as diesel prices surpass jet fuel costs for the first time in over a year, according to LSEG data. The continent is struggling to secure enough diesel for industry and agriculture, despite importing jet fuel from the US and Nigeria following the disruption of crude and fuel supplies due to the Iran war.
At the same time, western Europe experiences its hottest day of the year, with temperatures reaching 38.1°C in western London. This extreme heat has led to power outages and flight cancellations across major airports, including Paris, London, and Frankfurt. Over 2,400 flights were affected, with more than 1,900 cancellations and 2,227 delays reported.
The heatwave has also caused health concerns, with nurses collapsing and fires breaking out in the UK. The extreme conditions are expected to persist, with temperatures in parts of Europe reaching 40°C or higher.
As the continent battles both fuel shortages and record-breaking heat, authorities are under pressure to manage the growing challenges.
