A suspended police official is at the center of a controversial surveillance technology deal, according to evidence presented at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The inquiry revealed that late taxi boss Jotham "Mswazi" Msibi was allegedly involved in presenting a R19m deal to Czech authorities as a South African Police Service operation.
The commission examined WhatsApp exchanges from Msibi’s phone, which included encrypted chats and documents suggesting a covert collaboration. The evidence also highlighted a R1m deal with Spy-Tech, a company linked to the alleged sale of surveillance technology to eSwatini.
Further details emerged about a R3.5m trip to London, which authorities believe was part of the scheme. The inquiry is now focusing on how the South African Police Service may have been used as a front for the deal.
The case continues as the commission investigates the extent of the alleged conspiracy and its implications for public safety and institutional integrity.
