A member of Nigeria’s National Assembly, Senator Ali Ndume, has urged the military to intensify efforts to rescue 78 schoolchildren abducted by bandits in two communities in Borno state, according to a report from Abuja. The call comes amid ongoing security challenges in the region, where armed groups have increasingly targeted schools and communities.
Ndume, representing the Katsina North constituency, expressed concern over the safety of the children and the broader implications for education in the area. The abduction, which occurred in two separate villages, has raised alarm among local authorities and human rights organizations.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact locations of the children or the number of captives still in the hands of the perpetrators. The Nigerian Army has been deployed to the area, but no official statement has been released regarding progress in the rescue operation.
The incident highlights the persistent threat of violence against educational institutions in northern Nigeria, where insecurity has led to the closure of schools and displacement of students. Local leaders are calling for increased security presence and faster intervention to ensure the children’s safe return.
