The Nigerian Senate has summoned officials from the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following the country’s poor performance in recent World Cup qualifiers. The Senate Committee on Sports convened the meeting after the men’s national team, the Super Eagles, failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Meanwhile, the women’s team, the Super Falcons, also missed out on the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The committee expressed concern over the declining fortunes of Nigerian football, citing a lack of progress and structural issues within the sport’s governing bodies. The meeting aimed to address the challenges facing the national teams and to hold officials accountable for the setbacks. The NSC and NFF leaders were expected to provide explanations and propose solutions to improve the sport’s standing on the international stage.

The failure to qualify for both men’s and women’s World Cups has raised questions about the effectiveness of current management strategies. The Senate is now looking for concrete plans to revitalize Nigerian football and ensure better results in future international competitions. The outcome of this meeting could shape the future direction of football governance in the country.
